Being a new or expectant mum is often stressful and joyful in equal measures. Trying to take care of your little one is huge work that requires a lot of self-sacrifice and discipline. That’s why a lot of new mums tend to feel overwhelmed while trying to juggle all the tasks and expectations regarding everything related to motherhood.

But, another thing that new mums and mums need to deal with is the constant discussion about their body weight. Eating healthy is crucial for your wellbeing, so here are some eating tips that will help you look and feel your best.

DON’T SKIP MEALS

Skipping meals often seems like an easy way out, but if you’re trying to live healthily, then you should make sure to have regular meals. Breakfast is often the most important one, so rather than substituting it with coffee, it’s better to eat healthy cereals, yogurt and fruit. Also, if possible, try coming up with a unique meal schedule, so you’ll be able to take care of your baby and eat regularly at the same time.

A BALANCED DIET IS A KEY

You’ve probably heard about the importance of a balanced diet. Vegetables, fruits, lean meat, whole grains, seeds, nuts are important as they’ll provide your body with all the necessary nutrients and vitamins that your body needs to survive and thrive. Also, feel free to consider eating seafood low in mercury, low-fat dairy products, and eggs.

DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE FATS

Fats are everywhere around us, so rather than skip them altogether, it’s much better to educate about them, so you’ll be able to make the best and most informed dietary choice. Therefore, trying to learn what are the most healthy fats will definitely help you choose the healthiest fatty foods that will promote your well-being and keep your body weight in check. Also, keep in mind that foods that contain unhealthy trans fats, such as sweets, coffee creamers and fried foods should be avoided, or at least consumed minimally.

DRINK ENOUGH LIQUIDS

Staying hydrated is crucial for your health, especially if you’re breastfeeding your little one. But, in order to do it properly, make sure to limit your consumption of caffeinated drinks, and instead choose water, milk and healthy juices, and caffeine-free herbal teas. Drinking a glass of a healthy liquid while breastfeeding is always a great idea, so make sure to have a glass or a cup of your favourite drink near your breastfeeding corner.

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY

Spicy foods are common in many cultures all over the world. Even though these types of foods won’t usually harm the baby, they can still cause gastrointestinal issues to a mother. So, if you notice symptoms such as bloating, gas or acid reflux after eating certain spicy foods, make sure to limit your intake, at least until you feel comfortable eating such foods again. The same goes for other types of food groups: listening to your body will give you an insight into the way your body deals with different foods, and that can show you what’s works for you and what to avoid.

CONCLUSION

Gaining weight during pregnancy is normal and expected. Similarly, losing weight after giving birth can be a daunting task, which is why it’s important to focus on your health and inner feelings rather than trying to conform to the expectations of others. These tips will help you start eating more healthily, however, be sure to do so on your terms. Diet culture is already harmful enough, so rather than trying to lose weight only, make sure to create healthy and consistent eating habits that will help you live the best life as a new mother.
